1. Do you actually need to change it?
If you are a resident in Spain (have TIE/NIE residency):
You can only drive with your UK licence for 6 months from the date you become resident.

After that, your UK licence is not valid for driving in Spain, So yes — if you live here full-time, you must exchange it.

2. Good news: No driving test needed
Thanks to a UK–Spain agreement:
You can exchange directly
- No theory test
- No practical test
As long as your UK licence is valid

3. When to apply
You should:
Apply within your first 6 months of residency
Ideally start as soon as you get your TIE
Delays are common, and you cannot legally drive once your 6 months expires until the Spanish licence is issued.

5. Step-by-step process
Step 1: Get a DVLA check code
Done online via UK DVLA
Allows Spain to verify your licence
Step 2: Do a medical test
At a Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores
Quick test (eyesight, reflexes)
Takes 20–30 minutes
Step 3: Book a DGT appointment (cita previa)
With Spain’s traffic authority (DGT)
Choose “canje de permiso” (licence exchange)
Step 4: Attend appointment
Bring all documents:
Submit your UK licence
Pay the fee
They process your exchange
You’ll usually get a temporary licence to drive while waiting.

Step 5: Receive your Spanish licence
Sent by post
Takes roughly 4–8 weeks (can vary) 

6. Important things people get wrong
You cannot keep both licences — your UK one is sent back to DVLA 

An International Driving Permit does NOT replace this
If you miss the deadline, you may be unable to drive until it’s sorted
